Want to get promoted? Be ready to ask for it.

As a leader and people manager, I’ve often been involved in promoting professionals, team leads, and a couple of directors. More often than not, among those who showed potential, the ones who also expressed the desire and advocated for themselves were the first to be seriously considered.

Managers do notice achievements and growing responsibilities. But when it comes to promotion, especially into leadership roles, I’ve found myself expecting (and hoping) that candidates will be proactive. Show me you’re ready and tell me you’re ready.

Demonstrating value is essential, but it’s not the same as clearly stating your intent. Expressing a desire for promotion isn’t just about accomplishments or new value ideas, it’s about signaling that you’re mentally ready to step up.
That’s because seeking recognition is not the same as wanting a promotion. I realized this more than once in conversations with people I assumed were ready, when in fact, they were looking for appreciation/recognition, not new responsibility.

Here’s my advice:
** Document your wins. Track and highlight your impact.
** Understand the process. Know how and when promotions are evaluated.
** Advocate for yourself. Frame your ask around your commitment to grow and contribute more.
** Be smart about timing. If you’ve just changed roles or the company is in flux, be patient, but don’t stay silent.

Looking to move up? Let’s talk. I help professionals prepare and position themselves for their next steps with confidence.
